MUSIC CHANNELS

Above are all the music channels available on Sky+, however before researching suitable music channels to promote our music video, I decided to take on the responsibility of watching a variety of different music channels on my TV to gain a greater understanding of what they show and the content included in it. The images below display the different channels I watched for roughly 5-10 minutes each from the time period of 2-3pm.

Music channels are the advocators for music video's that are made to be aired on the TV. The more well known music channels in the UK such as MTV, Kiss, Viva and Kerrang (above) can be accessed on either free view or cable channels. There is also the rise of online music channels such as Vevo which is up and coming to YouTube providing viewers with a huge variety of new and exclusive music videos.

MTV Rocks was launched in Launched in October 1998 and is owned by Viacom International Media Networks Europe. MTV Rocks is one of many MTV subsidirary channels including base, dance, classic and hits. Each MTV sub channel has it own colour to distinguish it from their other sub channels. Rocks happens to be green and the actual MTV original logo itself is always presented on screen as a black 'M' and white 'TV' to ensure the TV stands out from the black and also so it correlates with the stereotype of rock music being associated with black and white colours. I feel the target audience of this channel is young indie-rock viewers as indie does fall under this category of MTV Rocks.

KISS TV was launched on 26th June 1998 and is owned by Box Television. It is based on the format of the Bauer owned London radio station Kiss 100, which started as a pirate radio station in London in 1985. Kiss TV celebrated the 20th anniversary of its launch in 2005. This channel predominantly plays pop, RnB and Hip-Hop music, so is totally different to MTV Rocks. The logo of the TV channel is obviously inspired by radio station

logo and is used for the TV channel also. The shape surrounding the text, the iconic Kiss logo, suggests a unique, original idea that is an abstract take on a 'kiss' itself. Due to the name "kiss" this implicates a feeling of fun in which I think the channel intends to attract would definately be of a younger age and most likely female due to the name "Kiss". This channel plays mostly modern mainstream music and therefore there is no link to our song choice and therefore this channel is not suitable for our music video.

MUSIC CHANNELS ANALYSIS

Kerrang! was launched in spring 2001and is currently owned by Box Television. Kerrang is a rock focused music channel that can vary from hardcore rock such as 'metal rock' to indie such as "indie rock/indie pop". The logo of Kerrang! very much says rock with the conventional black and white colour scheme and the lines going through the text, also with some of the letter having bits torn out of them. It gives off a strong rock vibe which is their aim to present this house style and iconography throughout. The target audience for Kerrang! would be aimed at a younger audience as it surrounds the theme of "rebellion" within the teenage era. However it could also be aimed at middle aged rock fans who listen to this channel.

4Music was launched on 15 August 2008 and is also owned by Box Television (Bauer Media  Group/Channel Four Television Corporation). 4Music mostly plays dance and pop anthems however can vary in other departments on occassion. The brightness of the pink in the logo does suggest a colourful and fun vibe which correlates with the dance anthems. The fact that it is in a cube-like formation also suggests connotations of a club theme to which is does portray in the music they play. I feel the audience in which the channel is trying to attract would be a middle aged audience due to the smooth, slick and subtle layout. This channel clearly has a versitile audience in which the age is varied. This channel is also not suitable as it does not fit the genre of our song choice.
